ABSTRACT
Introduction: Chronic pulmonary thromboembolic disease is difficult to determine because it can remain asymptomatic or be a chance finding, with an incidence of 5 individuals/million inhabitants/year. However, it is estimated that more than 317 thousand of all deaths that occurred in hospitals can be attributed to this cause, which can reach a mortality of 38%.Objective: To describe the case of a patient with chronic pulmonary thromboembolic disease as a clinical-radiological finding.
Case report: We report the case of a 54 year old, male who suffered a trauma 3 months earlier that caused a fracture of the left clavicle and sustained pain in the ipsilateral lower limb. He came to the consultation for a history of chest pain, dyspnea on physical exertion, cough, hemoptoic expectoration and fever. The chest X-ray revealed pleural effusion with a condensation process. The chest tomography revealed pulmonary thromboembolism.
Conclusions: Chronic pulmonary thromboembolic disease is a high-frequency entity; the diagnostic suspicion should not be limited in those patients with an atypical presentation. This diagnostic possibility should be considered in cases where the clinical presentation profile is subacute or chronic.
