ABSTRACT
Introduction: cancer is one of the most feared diseases in the world, more than a statistic; it is a reality, a chronic and silent disease. Objective: to characterize clinically and epidemiologically patients diagnosed with leukemia at the “Pepe Portilla” Provincial Pediatric Hospital. Method: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in 40 patients diagnosed with leukemia at the “Pepe Portilla” Provincial Pediatric Hospital during the period from 2016 to 2019. The information was extracted from the medical records of the patients and from the Statistical Registries of the Oncohematology Service. The variables studied were age at onset, sex, personal and family pathological history, morphological variety of leukemia, initial signs and symptoms, and laboratory results. Descriptive statistics were applied. Results: a predominance of patients between 1 and 4 years of age of debut age (32.5 %) and males (65 %) was reported. Acute lymphoid leukemia was the most frequent presentation (72.5 %), 20 patients had a pathological history of genetic and hematological diseases (50 %). Anorexia, asthenia, fever, infections and adenopathies were the main manifestations of the disease debut; 24 patients diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukemia presented anemia (82.7 %). Conclusions: male patients and the first age group of 1 to 4 years predominated, as well as acute lymphoid leukemia. Personal and family pathological antecedents of hematological diseases were frequent; anorexia, asthenia, fever, infections and lymphadenopathy, as well as anemia.REFERENCES
