ABSTRACT
Despite being a rare entity, bacterial endocarditis is a cause of great morbidity and mortality worldwide. The most frequent causes of bacterial endocarditis are Gram positive cocci, among which Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for 80% of cases. Less frequently, it is caused by gram negative rods and exceptionally by fungi. Although Staphylococcus lentus is a Gram positive cocci, it is a bacteria that rarely causes infection in human beings. The main risk factor for infections by S. lentus is exposure to farm animals. Although there are very few cases reported, all of the published cases have the epidemiological risk factor of zoonosis. In this case report, we present a case of subacute infective endocarditis by Staphylococcus lentus MecA(+) requiring surgical and antibiotic treatment in an 81 year old male without traditional risk factors.
