ABSTRACT
We designed a survey applied to 520 plastic surgeons to analyze changes in the use of breast implants. Demographic variables, implant characteristics, surgical technique, postoperative care, and complications was collected. The results we obtained were compared with those in a previous survey. Round implants were the most used (N = 496, 95.3%). Antibiotic prophylaxis is used by 99% and cephalosporins are used in 75.5%. Pocket irrigation to prevent infection is used by 74.2% and the recommendations made by Adams to reduce infections are followed by 57.8%. The surgical accesses were inframammary sulcus 71.5%; periareolar 27.8% and axillary 0.5%. The subfascial plane was used in 35.7%, subglandular 27.5%, dual plane 18.8% and retro muscular 17.8%. 25.1% reported that they have had cases of infection between 1 and 5% of their patients. 43.6% report acute seroma in 5 to 10% of their patients and 34.2% report chronic seroma in less than 1%. Periareolar access was associated with a higher risk of infection (p = 0.001). It is not only the texture of the implant that is related to lymphoma, it has also been found that the involvement of bacteria, chronic irritation or a genetic component may be linked to this pathology. The change of the texture of the implants does not guarantee the decrease or eradication of the lymphoma. Breast implant-associated lymphoma has contributed to 59% of participants changing their preference regarding surgical technique and type of implant.
