Oral medium chain triglycerides in premature infants and their relationship with brachial circumference

ABSTRACT
Introduction: poor weight gain in the preterm infant is a cause of prolonged hospital stay. Enteral medium chain triglyceride (MCT-oil) is a strategy for gaining body fat stores and muscle mass.
Objective: to investigate the role of MCT-oil as an enteral supplement by assessing brachial circumference and the brachial circumference/head circumference index (BC/HC).
Material and methods: observational, comparative, case-control study. The first group is with preterm infants supplemented with MCT-oil. The control group, preterm infants without MCT-oil supplementation. Dose of 2 mL/kg/day in eight intakes administered directly into the mouth coinciding with milk intake.
Results: at discharge, the MCT group presented higher arm circumference than the control group (7.2 ± 0.77 vs 6.4 ± 0.46) p < 0.05. At four weeks of outpatient follow-up the MCT group had greater brachial circumference than the control group (10.4 ± 1.4 vs 8.6 ± 1.7) p < 0.05. Comparing the BC/HC index at discharge the MCT group had higher BC/HC index than the control group (0.2314 ± 0.26 vs 0.2108 ± 0.14) p < 0.001, but at four weeks there was no significant difference (p = 0.080).
Conclusions: the use of MCT-oil as a preterm supplement is good strategy for gaining body fat stores and muscle mass.
