ABSTRACT
Introduction: abscesses, known as pus collections, can become serious health problems for people, which can lead to peritonitis with complications that can endanger the life of those who suffer from them. Hence, this is a problem that occurs with relative frequency in the surgical services specialties.
Objective: to characterize the presence of abscesses in patients admitted to the surgical service of the Roosevelt Hospital between 2012 and 2019.
Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out, with data from those discharged due to abscesses in the surgical service of the Roosevelt Hospital from 2012-2019. Variables were operationalized to achieve the objective. The principle of data confidentiality was complied. The variables were summarized with absolute and relative frequency distributions; we worked with the arithmetic mean or average for hospital stay.
Results: The prevalence of abscesses was 14.4 per thousand admissions to the surgical service of this hospital, with a minimum of 1 day and a maximum of 100 days. The average length of stay was 14 days. The male sex predominated in 52% of admissions for this cause. The most frequent location was in the abdominal region and within it, in the retroperitoneum.
Conclusion: abscesses constitute a health problem for people admitted for this cause in this hospital, and it is of vital importance to deepen in the reason for such long stays for some locations.
