Facial dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans: a case report and review

ABSTRACT

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is an unusual, slow-growing mesenchymal tumor of the dermis characterized by aggressive local invasion and a high recurrence rate. This tumor occurs mainly on the trunk and proximal extremities; though, between 10 and 15% can affect: the scalp, neck, forehead, or cheeks. We report a 28-year-old woman, with an exophytic lesion in the right mandibular region of eight months of evolution. After clinical and imaging evaluation, the diagnosis of probable hemangioma vs. soft tissue tumor was established, and she underwent surgical excision. Post-surgical histopathological studies revealed dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. A complete resection of the tumor was obtained, and the patient is under active surveillance by the oncological surgery service. Despite its low frequency, it is important to maintain a high level of suspicion. Due to its propensity for local recurrence, close long-term monitoring is necessary.
