ABSTRACT
Introduction. Cardiac arrest is a sudden event that triggers the death of the patient or irreversible functional
consequences at the neurological level. Therapeutic hypothermia is an intervention which has been studied
over the years as an adjuvant in the management of post arrest syndrome to favor and preserve the neurological
status.
Objective. The aim of this article is to gather evidence on therapeutic hypothermia intervention to improve
survival and neurological preservation in post arrest patients.
Methodology. Systematic review, through the DeCS
and MeSH documentary language, by consulting the databases PUBMED, Epistemonikos, COCHRANE, ELSEVIER,
Google Scholar; this study is based on the PRISMA guide.
Discussion. Temperature management is a suggested
practice as an intervention in post arrest syndrome. A recent clinical trial supports that therapeutic hypothermia
has similar effects to non-application of it and emphasizes normal temperature management.
Conclusion.
According to the systematic review of the state of art, there is no conclusive evidence whether therapeutic
hypothermia improves survival or neurological status in an optimal manner and if temperature control between
36-37°C is sufficient to avoid the effects related to the inflammatory response resulting from cardiac arrest.
