ABSTRACT
Introduction: Sepsis is a serious public health problem. Knowing the behavior of this serious condition is a scientific support to develop health strategies. Objective: To describe clinically and epidemiologically children diagnosed with sepsis.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out at Paquito González Pediatric Hospital in Cienfuegos, from 2009 to 2019. The children who, upon admission to the Intensive Care Unit, were diagnosed with sepsis, severe sepsis or septic shock, were studied. A total of 175 patients were included in the study. The variables studied were age, stage of sepsis at admission, stay, comorbidities, treatment, site of origin of sepsis, if there was microbiological isolation, organ with dysfunction and mortality. The data were entered into the SPSS statistical program, version 15.0. The results were expressed in frequencies and percentages.
Results: Mortality of severe forms of sepsis was 44.4%. The incidence of sepsis, for all stages, was higher in children under one year of age. Many patients, despite being admitted with non-advanced forms of sepsis, evolved unfavorably. The most common site of origin of sepsis was the respiratory system. The most frequent comorbidity was infantile cerebral palsy.
Conclusions: The epidemiological characteristics and the treatment indicated for sepsis do not differ significantly from that reported in the literature. The high incidence of severe sepsis/septic shock secondary to soft tissue, bone and joint infections is striking, compared to other similar series.
