ABSTRACT
Introduction: Sleep disorder in children with attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder is frequent. It is linked to affective, behavioral and cognitive manifestations, which interferes with their quality of life.
Objective: To identify the differences in memory and functioning in children with attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder with and with no sleep disorder.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional and comparative study was carried out in 18 children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (primary level). Seven of them had sleep disorders and 11 did not. The research was developed at the Neuropsychology Service of the International Center for Neurological Restoration from July 2018 to December 2019. Wechsler intelligence scale, infant neuropsychological evaluation set and digital electroencephalogram were applied. Structured interview, Conners test and Scale of sleep disturbances in childhood/Bruni were applied to the family member of each one. Descriptive statistics, comparison of means and proportions, and Mann-Whitney U test were used, p ≤ 0.05.
Results: The results revelead that male sex (83%), disorders at initiating or maintaining sleep (86%), epileptiform disorder (75%), verbal memory impairment (67%) and executive functioning (61%) prevailed. Significant differences (p = 0.02) were obtained between both groups in verbal memory/delayed recall.
Conclusions: Difficulties in verbal memory, executive functioning and brain electrical activity were found in children with attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder. Disorders at initiating or maintaining sleep influenced verbal memory / delayed recall in infants with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
