ABSTRACT
Introduction: Bone metastasis is the most frequent malignant disease that affects bone and it is responsible for most of the morbidity and mortality of malignant tumor disease.
Objective: To describe bone metastases from the scintigraphic point of view in a group of patients.
Methods: A retrospective and descriptive study was developed in the Nuclear Medicine service at Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital for the patients treated for clinical and histological diagnosis of cancer, who underwent bone scan as part of their admission from January 2018 to December 2018.
Results: The prevalence of bone metastasis obtained was 33%. In this sense, the male patients were more affected (35.37%) than female ones (29.44%). The most frequent primary site in the group with evidence of bone metastases was prostate (52.38%), followed by breast (27.81%) and lung (5.52%). A total of 145 patients (84%) had pain. The part of the body where metastases were most frequently detected was the spine (26.20%), followed by thorax (20.6%) and pelvis (18, 22%).
Conclusions: Bone scintigraphy, as a functional study, made it possible to early evaluate the presence of bone metastases in patients where pain was a predominant symptom, critically affecting the quality of life of each one of them.
