ABSTRACT
Background: Chondrosarcomas make up a group of tumors with a wide spectrum
of clinical and pathological findings, which have as a common characteristic the production
of neoplastic cartilage of unknown cause, they constitute 10% of malignant
bone tumors, of these between 2% and 5% are located in the head and neck region. In
laryngeal lesions, the most frequent is at the level of the cricoid, the main clinical sign
is dysphonia and/or dyspnea. Complementary imaging studies do not allow the distinction
between chondromas and chondrosarcomas, requiring a histological diagnosis of
certainty through a biopsy.
Clinical case: A 68-year-old female patient with dyspnea on exertion, who after
surgical treatment was diagnosed by histopathological examination as a clear cell
cricoid chondrosarcoma and later presented an intercostal metastasis; tumor that has
been highlighted due to its low frequency in the head and neck area.
Conclusions: The classic treatment of chondrosarcomas of the larynx is radical
surgery with negative margins, with an excellent prognosis if adequate resection is
performed.
