Stump apendicitis

ABSTRACT

Stump appendicitis is the inflammation of residual tissue after an appendectomy. With an incidence of 1 in 50,000 cases, the clinical presentation is the same as appendicitis; dismissing the possibility because of a previous appendectomy is a misleading consideration and usually delays the treatment. We report the case of a 38 year old patient with stump appendicitis 20 years after the appendectomy. A surgical management was given and, after an adequate evolution, the patient was discharged. The objective of this case report is to briefly revise this infrequent pathology, in order to maintain it as a differential diagnosis in cases where it is worth.
