ABSTRACT
Introduction and objectives: Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura comprise less than 5% of all pleural tumors. The objective is to describe the characteristics of the patients treated at the Hospital de Cardiología No. 34 of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social with a diagnosis of pleural solitary fibrous tumor between 2014-2019.
Material and methods: The series of 20 patients treated between 2014-2019 at the Cardiology Hospital No. 34 of the Mexican Social Security Institute in Monterrey, Mexico, undergoing open thoracotomy for complete resection of solitary fibrous tumor was reviewed retrospectively.
Results: 20 Patients with a mean age of 57.45 years were evaluated, 50.0% of the patients reported asymptomatic, the main clinical data reported by the patients was chest pain in 40.0% of the patients, the origin of the solitary fibrous tumor was located In 75.0% of the cases in the visceral pleura, the parietal pleura was reported as origin in 20.0% of the cases and 5.0% had an origin in the mediastinal pleura. The main side affected was the left, with 70.0%, while the right side was affected in 30.0% of cases.
Conclusions: In this study, there are data that are similar to those reported in the literature, including age range, clinical development characteristics and histopathological patterns.
