ABSTRACT
Encephalocele occurs from a neural tube defect due to a failure of the ectodermal surface to separate from the neuroectoderm. This type of defect includes a multifactorial etiology. We present a 43-year-old female indigenous patient, with an obstetric history of 14 pregnancies (13 deliveries and 1 spontaneous abortion). She came with pain to the emergency service of the Comprehensive Maternal and Child Care Center of Ixchiguán, San Marcos, Guatemala and was treated as part of the Cuban medical collaboration. A neonate with occipital encephalocele, without immediate neonatal complications, was born by caesarean section. Patient prognosis with this type of congenital malformation is variable, since it depends, firstly, on its location and size, type of herniated brain tissue, and on the other hand, on the number, type and severity of the associated malformations.REFERENCES
