Bacterial and fungal infections associated with COVID-19

ABSTRACT
A descriptive study was carried out at “Cmdte. Manuel Fajardo Rivero” Clinical and Surgical University Hospital in Santa Clara, Villa Clara from March to July 2020, with the aim of describing bacterial and fungal infections associated with COVID-19. The study population consisted of 202 patients who remained hospitalized with a confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Age, gender, associated infection, discharge status, isolated microorganisms, and antimicrobial susceptibility were the variables studied. The 7.9% of the patients had an associated infection; 7.4% died (most deaths occurred in March and April, prior to the establishment of the definitive protocol for the treatment of COVID-19 in Cuba). The 60% of the deceased patients had an associated infection. Escherichia coli was the most isolated microorganism. A diagnostic and therapeutic protocol is necessary to determine the bacterial and fungal infections associated with the coronavirus.REFERENCES
