ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the effects of hemodialysis on intraocular pressure in patients with terminal chronic kidney disease.
Methods: An observational, longitudinal, prospective and multicenter study was carried out in patients of the hemodialysis unit of the
Center for Research and Teaching in Health Sciences of the Civil Hospital of Culiacan as well as of the Regional General Hospital
No. 1 of the Mexican Institute of Social Security, in Culiacan, Sinaloa. The intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured with the AVIA
Tone-Pen, 30 minutes prior to hemodialysis, two hours after initiation and 30 minutes after the session ended. Statistical analysis was
performed with descriptive and inferential statistical tests.
Results: 80 eyes of patients with ERCT were included; 47.5% men and 52.5% women, from 25 to 76 years of age. A statistically
significant increase in IOP was observed between the different measurements in both eyes (p = .006) OD and (p = .017) OI. The
different etiologies of ERCT were HAS (32.5%), DM (40%), primary kidney disease (17.5%) and idiopathic (10%).
Conclusions: When comparing between the measurement times, it is concluded that the IOP had a statistically significant increase
compared to the baseline figure.
