Dietary habits in a group of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients from the State of Mexico

ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the dietary habits of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
Methods: Cross-sectional design was carried out in an
outpatient clinic in the city of Toluca, Mexico in April 2020. A convenience non-probabilistic sampling of one hundred types 2 diabetes
mellitus patients under pharmacological treatment was used. A specific questionnaire was designed for the dietary habits analysis.
Results:
The most important data were breakfast time between 4:00 and 11:00 am, 62% reported a continuous consumption of sugar, 70% said
they had snacks; 38% said to continue a frequent consumption of sugary drinks. The pharmacological treatment results showed that 51%
of the patients used only metformin, 25% metformin and glibenclamide, 16% used oral hypoglycemic agents and insulin, 7% only insulin,
and 1% glibenclamide as monotherapy.
Conclusions: 81% of the patients do not go with the nutritionist and there is a high intake of
refined sugar.
