ABSTRACT
Background: Fibromyalgia is a complex condition primarily characterized by widespread pain and fatigue; its complexity makes its
diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment difficult. This is commonly associated with poor knowledge amongst health care professionals.
Objective: To assess the specific knowledge about fibromyalgia and its non-pharmacological treatment among Mexican physiotherapists.
Methods and Materials: a cross-sectional study of Mexican physiotherapists was conducted utilizing a quantitative
questionnaire to assess their knowledge about Fibromyalgia symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
Results: The sample included
97/405 registered physiotherapists. 73% of responding participants had previous experience treating patients with Fibromyalgia; diffuse
pain (90%) and restless sleep (78%), were identified as the main symptoms. The most common method of diagnosis was consultation
including physical examination by a medical Practitioner (73%); physical exercise and antidepressants were considered the
optimum treatment combination (73%). 81% expressed that physical activity can improve patient well-being. More than half of the
participants (55%) were unfamiliar with the national Mexican clinical guideline, and 69% were unfamiliar with any national or international
guidelines.
Conclusions: The knowledge of fibromyalgia among Mexican physiotherapists is inconsistent with current best
practice guidelines. Education of physiotherapists regarding awareness and utilization of clinical guidelines could improve management
of patients with Fibromyalgia.
