ABSTRACT
Introduction: Burnout syndrome is common in healthcare personnel during pandemic situations.
Objective: To determine the occurrence and intensity of Burnout syndrome (BS) in Ecuadorian doctors and nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Method: An observational cross-sectional study was carried out. It included 224 physicians and nurses from institutions of the Ecuadorian integral health network, to whom Maslach Burnout Inventory was administered. Data were analyzed through linear regression models using R.
Results: More than 90% of medical and nursing staff had moderate to severe BS, which had a statistically significant association with function (doctor vs. nurse, age and gender). Doctors are more often affected than nurses, both globally and on the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscales.
Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 90% of medical and nursing staff presented moderate to severe BS, with doctors being the most frequently affected.
