ABSTRACT
Galactocele, also known as lactocele or milk cyst, is
a rare benign milk retention cyst that occurs almost
exclusively in lactating mothers. Blockage of a
mammary duct is the main etiologic factor and presents
as a single, rounded, painless lump in the breast.
The diagnosis is made by ultrasound and must be
differentiated from other breast diseases such as cysts,
fibroadenomas, abscesses or carcinomas. In most cases
it can be resolved spontaneously when breastfeeding
ceases. Fine-needle aspiration is usually diagnostic
and therapeutic, and in cases where the galactocele is
recurrent or persistent, it can be surgically removed.
We present the case of a 31-year-old female patient who,
5 months after the start of breastfeeding, presented a
breast lump in the upper inner quadrant of the right
breast of approximately 5 cm in diameter, with an
ultrasound diagnosis of galactocele, with aspiration
performed with fine needle. Surgical excision was
performed, presenting as a complication the formation
of a breast abscess at the surgical site that resolved
satisfactorily with drainage and antimicrobial therapy.
During the clinical course, surgical excision, and
treatment of complications, the mother continued to
exclusively breastfeed.
