ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the most frequent tomographic findings in thoracoabdominal blunt trauma patients.
Methodology: Prospective,
observational and cross-sectional study; universe of study: patients who entered the emergency department of the Hospital with
a diagnosis of thoracic and abdominal blunt trauma from December 1, 2017 to March 24, 2019.
Results: A sample of 56 patients with
male predominance was collected: 50 men (89%) and 6 women (11%), with a mean age of 29.6 years and a range of 18 to 73 years.
Motorcycle accident was the most frequent etiology (48.2%, n = 27). Regarding the assessed tomography, 42 were found with lesion
in one or several organs (75%) and 14 studies within normal (25%). The most frequent tomographic findings were free fluid in the
abdominal cavity (37.5%, n = 21), pulmonary contusion (33.9%, n = 19), splenic lesion (32.1%, n = 18), liver injury (25%, n = 14) and
normal study (25%, n = 14).
Conclusions: The present study demonstrates that the epidemiological and tomographic findings in our
population are similar to those reported in the literature, however it should be noted that motorcycle accident is the most frequent
cause of blunt trauma and it is also associated with greater amount of visceral lesions.
