ABSTRACT
The authors studied alterations in the leukocytes, erythrocytes and reticulocytes counts observed in 14 stray dogs experimentally infected with
Trypanosoma evansi (Steel, 1885) Balbiani, 1888. Dogs were evaluated at days 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 after infection. At the same time, 5 non-infected stray dogs were submitted to the same analysis. Only in the infected group changes were observed where erythrocytes count decreased from 5.6X10
6 /mm
3 to 3.9X10
6 /mm
3 . The acute infection did not cause any another significant alterations (p ‹ 0.05), but a slight increase in lymphocytes number was observed, probably due to hosts reaction against parasites.
