Approach to celiac disease in pediatrics

ABSTRACT

Celiac disease is a systemic autoimmune pathology, in which gluten consumption in people with genetic predisposition triggers an immune response, causing not only gastrointestinal but systemic manifestations. Its incidence and prevalence are rising, and it is an important diagnosis starting in the pediatric population. Given that the enteropathy will lead to problems such as malabsorption, weight loss and nutritional deficiency, high risk groups and children with compatible clinical manifestations must be screened to avoid grave consequences in their development, and mayor complications. The diagnosis is based on the clinical suspicion, the use of serological testing, and in some cases, biopsies and/or genetical testing. A gluten free diet is the most important measure for achieving the resolution of symptoms and the normalization of the intestinal architecture.
