ABSTRACT
Patients with acute pancreatitis of moderate to severe severity are at increased risk of complications, both local and systemic, which in turn have higher rates of morbidity andmortality. The most common local complications are peripancreatic and pancreatic fluid collections, which are classified according to acuity and content into four different categories. Fluid collections are suspected in patients with abdominal pain, increased pancreatic enzymes, organ failure, and/or signs of systemic inflammatory response syndrome. It is described by contrast-enhanced computed tomography images based on location, content, and wall thickness. Regarding its management, drainage is only necessary in infected collections, or in the case of the presence of symptoms, after a long period of conservative treatment. It is recommended to delay any endoscopic, radiological or surgical intervention for more than four weeks from the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis to facilitate its encapsulation, and thereby reduce possible adverse events.
