ABSTRACT
Objective. Evaluate the knowledge of the basic methods of statistics, epidemiology and research in resident physicians in the different
medical specialties with the endorsement of the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa.
Method. Descriptive
and prospective cross-sectional study, a sample of 278 residents from different medical specialties was included. The Novack questionnaire
on knowledge of epidemiology and statistics was used.
Results. The median for age was 28 years with an interquartile range
of 27-30 years. Male sex was the most frequent with 146 (52.5%). The median for the number of times they took the national exam
for medical residencies was 2 with an interquartile range 1-2 times. The family medicine specialty and the first grade of the specialty
were the most prevalent with 69 (24.8%) and 120 (43.2%) respectively. In 237 (85.3%) they obtained a not approved (≤5), and the
average grade was 3.87 ± 1.56.
Conclusions. The level of knowledge of the basic concepts of research and epidemiology in residents
of medical specialties is deficient. It is necessary to improve the study programs in these areas in the different medical schools or
colleges of the country
