ABSTRACT
Objetive: To describe the histological findings of thyroid lesions found in thyroid biopsies or resections and their correlation with the cytological
study (FNA) over a period of six years at Culiacán Civil Hospital.
Material and Method: This is a retrospective, descriptive, observational,
comparative and analytical study. Surgical specimens from total or partial thyroidectomies, which previously had a cytological result classified
in categories III to VI according to the Bethesda System, were analyzed for histological study in our Department of Pathology, from January
1, 2013 to December 31, 2018.
Results: On the entire sample studied, there is a clear predominance of female sex with 96 patients, while
the sixth decade of life was the age group with the highest incidence with 28 patients. 68% of the lesions diagnosed at our institution were
benign. A good reliability of the Cytological Diagnosis was observed as a diagnostic test to detect malignancy with a Sensitivity of 96.9%, a
Specificity of 98.7%, a PPV of 96.9% (84.3 - 99.4), a NPV of 98.7% (92.8 - 99.8) and Accuracy of 98.1% (93.4 - 99.5).
Conclusions: Due
to FNA’s high sensitivity, specificity and adequate correlation with the histopathological study, it can be affirmed that FNA is an effective
technique in the assessment of thyroid lesions, allowing a timely diagnosis and therefore recommending its routinary performance.
