ABSTRACT
Introduction: Developmental dysplasia of the hip is the most common orthopedic disorder in newborns, this diagnosis can lead to instability of the pediatric hip, as well as a series of complications with repercussions in adult life.
Objective: To stablish a universal screening program that allows an early diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip in the pediatric population of our hospital.
Material and methods: This is a descriptive paper about the implementation of a novel screening universal program for developmental dysplasia of the hip with ultrasonography in our hospital. Ultrasonography will be used as primary diagnostic tool in patients younger than 4 months and pelvis X-ray in patients older that 4 months.
Results: 102 ultrasounds have been performed in 51 patients and 7 pelvic X-rays have been analyzed in 7 patients, conforming a total of 58 patients who received care in this program for one year. 100% of the patients who underwent ultrasound have been classified as Graf type 1, which translates as healthy hips. The radiographs performed in 7 patients showed normal measurements, so they have also been classified as healthy.
Conclusions: Graf utrasonography technique is the most sensitive and specific tool available for early diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip in pediatric population.
