Influence of teaching ethics in the moral responsibility of the surgeon

ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine that surgeons’ percentage in a Hospital of Public Attendance has received ethical education and if this it has influenced in their responsibility like surgeons. Material and methods: It was evaluated the surgeon’s performance and their responsibility with the patients by means of a questionnaire with 11 questions, divided in three blocks that included: 1. The teaching of the ethics. 2. The surgeon’s responsibility in the communication and information with the patient and 3. The responsibility of the surgeon related with the surgical act. It was formed two groups, the group I with surgeons that if they had received the ethics matter, and the group II with surgeons that had not studied that matter. Fisher Exact Test was used to compare the results between both groups.Results: We interview 15 general surgeons of a general hospital. 8 were of the group I and 7 of the II. Only one of the 11 questions had significant difference, it was that were the surgeon retires before having concluded the procedure so that the residents finish it. Conclusion: It is necessary to inculcate in all the doctors, especially in the surgeons, the moral responsibility of establishing a permanent communication with their patients that it is friendly, affectionate, from principle to end and in all moment to be sincere with the information that is provided to the sick one and their relatives. This would be achieved if all them doctors take an ethics course during their professional formation.
