ABSTRACT
Introduction: Pre-university students (adolescents) must know life support measures to be able to provide help to colleagues and relatives in cases of medical emergencies. Objective: To determine the level of perception about the need for life support teaching in pre-university students.
Methods: A descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study was carried out in Cienfuegos province, from September to December 2019. The sample included 450 students from five high school out of the twelve in the province. The information was collected through an anonymous questionnaire. The variables analyzed were age, sex, school year, type of emergency, basic knowledge, first aid training, level of referred knowledge, importance of training and reasons that justify it, among others. For statistical processing, a SPSS 21.0 database was created.
Results: The mean age was 15.85 (± 0.769) years, with slight predominance of 11th grade students (56.7%) and females (62.2%). 48% of the students had witnessed some situation that required urgent medical attention and, 70.4% of them self-assessed that their level of knowledge did not allow them to act. 50.9% of the students considered their training in first aid as mid-level quality and 32% considered it to be poor. 55.8% considered that it was a relevant problem and 81.55% believed that training on the subject was necessary.
Conclusions: Pre-university students have already had contact with medical emergencies and consider that their level of knowledge does not allow them to act in these situations. In this sense, they consider the theoretical-practical training on life support very necessary, in order to be prepared as to be able to save a life.
