ABSTRACT
Introduction: Facial paralysis, as old as mankind, constitutes an event that causes psychological disability. Objective: To describe the relationship between the degree of facial nerve involvement and psychological disability in adults with peripheral facial paralysis.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study was carried out in adults who attended the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation consultations at “Máximo Gómez Báez” and Ernesto Guevara de la Serna community clinics from January 2017 to January 2019. The variables studied were sex, age, personal history, anatomical location, time of evolution, degree of involvement of the facial nerve and psychological disability. Percentage, mean and Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) were used.
Results: The female sex predominated (56.25%). Hypertension (56.25%) and diabetes mellitus (43.75%) were the diseases with the highest incidence; the left side was the most affected (56.25%) and grade II facial nerve involvement presented the highest percentage (50.0%). Depression (21.87%) and anxiety (15.62%) were evident in patients with grade III, while both dimensions were present in 6.25% of patients with grade IV.
Conclusions: Facial nerve palsy prevailed in female adults, between the fourth and fifth decade of life, with history of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Grade II facial nerve involvement predominated with six months evolution and one year in the left side. Psychological disability was found in adults with higher severity of facial injury.
