ABSTRACT
Listeriosis is an infection caused by the agent Listeria monocytogenes, a ubiquitous bacteria with an intracellular life cycle and particular epidemiologic characteristics. The infection is contracted majorly through oral ingestion, and certain populations are particularly prone to get infected. Pregnant women are a vulnerable population, since they have 17 times more risk of contracting the infection and they can potentially develop extremely severe fetal consequences. The clinical presentation of the infection can be very diverse and the diagnosis is difficult if one does not have an early clinical suspicion. There are multiple lines of antibiotic treatment suitable for the different conditions of the patient, which reduce maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. As it is a foodborne infection, it is potentially preventable; therefore, proper food handling and hand hygiene are the main measures for disease prevention.REFERENCES
