ABSTRACT
Introduction: Acute spinal cord injury is a common pathology with an international incidence of 16-64/100,000 people, it affects the motor and sensory system of patients, due to the limited information on the efficacy of current treatments, it continues to present a high morbidity and mortality.
Objective: To analyze the information available on the current management of patients with acute spinal cord injury, as well as the lines of research that are being developed for their benefit.
Results: The pathophysiological mechanism of acute spinal cord injury was reviewed as well as the tools available for the proper management of these patients. In addition, guidelines from different countries were analyzed to establish differences in management. Finally, there are many lines of research that show promise for reducing high morbidity and mortality in patients with acute spinal cord injury and improving their quality of life.
Conclusions: Acute spinal cord injury is a relatively frequent pathology that implies a whole therapeutic challenge. The current pharmacological and surgical management continues to be controversial due to the limited information on its efficacy, so it is important to carry out further studies regarding the use of the newest drugs to obtain a regimen that can be useful and does not compromise the health of individuals with this disease.
