ABSTRACT
This paper constitutes an initial exploration in leadership
social dynamics. It presents data derived from the
measurement of actual verbal interactions occurring during
leadership emergence in a dyad context. A between-group
design was employed in which eight participants were
divided into four dyads; two dyads conformed by Mexican
only and two by Japanese only participants. Members of
each dyad had to communicate and collaborate to solve a
digital task called The Assembly Task during which their
verbal interactions were recorded, coded and analyzed as
well as their task performance. Results showed that when
there is balance, in terms of dominance and compliance,
between participants their collective productivity is enhanced
independently of nationality. Discussion focuses on data
commonalities found between nationalities and argues for
the importance of introducing “face to face” dyad level
analysis in the field of leadership in organizational
psychology.
