ABSTRACT
Introduction: The practice of physical activity in its sports modality is desirable among the child and youth population. The objective of this study was to identify the differences in blood metabolic levels between men with adequate body mass and overweight.
Material and methods: Participants were 74 male adolescents with normal weight and 72 with overweight according to their body mass index (BMI). The participants were assigned to two groups: group I (GI) with participants with a BMI = 20 to 25 (kg/m
2) and group II (GII) with BMI > 25 (kg/m
2). In all cases, body dimension was measured, and analyzed the biomarkers: glucose (Gluc), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and high (HDL-C), low (LDL-C) and very low density (VLDL-C) lipoproteins.
Results: The body weight (GI = 58.93 ± 7.82 vs GII = 75.7 ± 14.10 kg), the body mass index (GI = 21.80 ± 1.81 vs GII = 29.08 ± 4.07), Gluc levels (mmol/L) (GI = 4.70 ± 0.28 vs GII = 4.97 ± 0.41), TG (mmol/L) (GI = 1.09 ± 0.39 vs GII = 1.24 ± 0.38) and VLDL-C (mmol/L) (GI = 0.46 ± 0.10 vs GII = 0.52 ± 0.2), were higher in the overweight/obese group (p < 0.05). A one-way analysis of variance was performed to assess the difference between groups, with alpha at 95%.
Conclusion: It is considered necessary to include studies that assess the metabolic status of participants in sports activities, particularly in adolescents with high weight (BMI > 25 kg/m
2).
