ABSTRACT
Introduction: Bromelain has been used for therapeutic purposes since the 19th century. Different studies have been reported
both in vitro experimentation and in animals and even in humans that showed favorable results for the gastrointestinal
system.
Objective: To develop a review of the investigations carried out in the last two decades that refer to the
gastrointestinal therapeutic use of bromelain in humans, animals and in vitro experimentation.
Material and method: An
exploratory review (scoping review) was carried out based on the PRISMA requirements for this type of review. The
documentary search was carried out in the studies published in the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Google Scholar, Springer
Link and Wiley databases.
Results: Thirteen articles were found, five clinical trials, four in animals and four in vitro. The
results of the therapeutic effects of bromelain were significant due to its properties as an analgesic, antacid, anticancer, antiinflammatory,
immunomodulatory, prebiotic, probiotic, in reducing constipation and gastric emptying.
Conclusions:
Bromelain has beneficial effects at the gastrointestinal level in humans, it is only necessary to deepen the evidence to continue
the research of the last two decades.
