ABSTRACT
Juvenile plantar dermatosis (JPD) is a chronic disease that affects children and young adolescents with atopic susceptibility and is characterized by symmetrical bright erythema, superficial scaling, and fissuring of the weight-bearing surfaces of the feet. Moisture, friction, and the transition from "wet to dry" probably play a role in its development, but the exact etiology and pathophysiology remain unknown. The differential diagnosis of JPD includes allergic or irritant contact dermatitis, tinea pedis, or psoriasis. Diagnosis is clinical, but patch testing can be helpful in identifying relevant allergens if contact sensitivity is suspected. Treatment and prevention are aimed at controlling humidity through the use of absorbent cotton socks and footwear or sandals that allow perspiration. Topical barrier creams, emollients, and topical steroids can also be effective.
