ABSTRACT
Background: when there is clinical doubt in dermatology, the histopathological study is the definitive diagnostic tool. Objectives: construct a database for future sociodemographic research.
Materials and methods: this was an observational, descriptive, and retrospective study conducted in the Dermatopathology division of the General Hospital Dr. Manuel Gea González, where a search was conducted in the database of histopathological diagnoses reported in 2019.
Results: there were 2 324 histopathological studies found, 16 of which were normal skin. Tumors (1 424 [61.27 %]) and inflammatory diseases (884 [38.03 %]) were the two main categories. Malignant epidermal tumors (645 [45.29 %]), melanocytic neoplasms (222 [15.58 %]), benign tumors, and epidermal cysts (196 [13.76 %]) were among the tumor diseases divided into subcategories. Infectious (316 [35.74 %]) and non-infectious (568 [64.25 %]) diseases were separated from the group of inflammatory diseases.
Conclusions: tumor diseases (1 424 [61.27 %]) outnumber inflammatory diseases (884 [38.03 %]) in a typical year of work at the Dr. Manuel Gea González general hospital.
