The oral communicative competence in English in students of first year of Medicine

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The general training of health professionals is an essential priority in higher medical education, in this aspect the teaching of the English language is a crucial need, for this reason its learning is included in all the medical specialties syllabi.Objective: To design a teaching material to improve the development of the communicative competence in English in medical students.
Methods: An experimental research was carried out during the period 2018-2020. The population is formed by 500 students, from which 215 were selected randomly. It was assumed the dialectical-materialistic method, and some other theoretical methods were employed: analysis and synthesis, induction-deduction, systemic-structural-functional, to interpret and arrange the bibliographic information, the historical-logical, to determine the level reached in the development of the process; empirical methods: documentary analysis, survey, scientific observation, expert criteria; and statistical procedures.
Results: The main difficulties in the development of the oral communicative competence in English were related to the low inclusion and treatment of language skills, the insufficient preparation of students in the different themes analyzed and their narrow skill to develop the oral communicative competence, then a teaching material was prepared to solve these deficiencies.
Conclusions: The research work carried out reveals the insufficiencies in the development of the oral communicative competence in English. The opinions and evaluations collected confirm the contribution of the material in the development of this competence, evidenced in the improvement of the motivational level and the achievement of curricular tasks.
