ABSTRACT
Introduction: gestational diabetes mellitus is the most frequent metabolic complication in pregnancy. Objective: to estimate the prevalence of risk factors for gestational diabetes in the obstetric population of Ciego de Ávila during the year 2018.
Methods: a cross-sectional analytical study was carried out with all the pregnant women (2,200) diagnosed with gestational diabetes. The information was obtained from existing medical records in family offices. Point prevalence with 95 % confidence intervals and prevalence ratio were estimated. Ethical aspects were met.
Results: the average age of the pregnant women was 29,4±5,7 years. Of the pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes, 25 did not have this condition. The provincial prevalence of gestational diabetes was 3,95 %. The most affected municipalities were Ciego de Ávila (7,77 %) and Majagua (6,33 %). Maternal age over 30 years, the history of a first-degree relative with diabetes mellitus and excess weight at the beginning of pregnancy were the factors that prevailed in the study.
Conclusions: in 2018, in Ciego de Ávila province, the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus was low. Maternal age over 30 years, a history of a first-degree relative with diabetes mellitus, and excess weight at the beginning of pregnancy are factors to be taken into account in this population for prevention and health promotion tasks.
