ABSTRACT
Introduction: Disorders of the pelvic floor from the point of view of the care received by patients are conceived as a low priority in relation to other health problems. Pelvic floor dysfunction includes a number of disorders in this region; The most frequent form of presentation is urinary incontinence, the highest number of cases is reported in the female population (between 10% and 40%), with a prevalence associated with certain risk factors. A documentary analysis was carried out, which included original and review articles, published from 2007 to 2020, a search of the Pubmed, SciELO, Hinari, Cochrane and Clinical Key databases was performed. 60 articles were identified and reviewed, 12 of them were useful, in addition, textbooks, monographs from various magazines and doctoral theses were consulted, which allowed the logical historical analysis of the evolution of the definition. Conclusions: Urinary incontinence is a worldwide health problem that is corroborated by studies carried out in patients at risk and in the general population, with a higher presence in women. The results obtained from the previous studies consulted corroborate the effectiveness of perineal physiotherapy and of strengthening the muscles of the pelvic floor, which demonstrates the notable impact on the quality of life of the patients benefiting from these therapies. Epidemiological studies have begun to be carried out in Cuba that make it possible to know the state of this health situation in the country and the need to design a treatment strategy to solve this problem.REFERENCES
