ABSTRACT
Introduction: The epidemiology of ankle fractures is poorly understood in Mexico.
Objective: To present the epidemiological profile of ankle fractures at the Hospital Regional "General Ignacio Zaragoza" of the ISSSTE in Mexico City.
Material and methods: We reviewed the records of the Automated Hospital Discharge Subsystem (SAEH) of the ISSSTE for the period January 2010-December 2019 to search pediatric and adult patients who were discharged due to ankle fractures. The following information was obtained: age, gender, type of ankle fracture according to the Danis-Weber classification, and length of hospital stay. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed.
Results: 2144 patients were identified (55.6% female and 44.4% male). 6.15% of the fractures occurred in ≤ 18 years, 12.3% in 19-30 years, 36.5% in 31-50 years, 31% in 50-65 years, and 14% in those over 65 years. Weber type A, B, and C fractures represented 11.1%, 64.8%, and 24.1%, respectively. Weber C fractures were significantly more frequent in males than in females (29.4 versus 19.8%, p < 0.001).
Conclusions: Ankle fractures were more frequent in young adults, in women and the most common were Weber type B.
