ABSTRACT
Introduction: The anatomy of the bile duct considered normal is estimated to occur in approximately half of all human beings, since, frequently, there are variants of normality that involve the hepatic ducts, the common bile duct, and the cystic duct.
Objective: To describe the anatomical variants of the bile duct diagnosed by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopangreatography.
Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, observational study was carried out, which consisted in an analysis of images from the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopangreatography archive of Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical-Surgical Hospital corresponding to the months between September 2015 and December 2017.
Results: 26.9% of the cases presented anatomical variants of the bile duct. 38.5% of them corresponded to the hepatic ducts. 52.8% were present in the cystic duct. There were no anatomical variations of the common bile duct.
Conclusions: The variants of normality in the bile ducts are dissimilar and frequent (around one third of the cases), which raises the need to know and identify them with any of the imaging techniques. Thus, surgical complications can be avoided in the future.
