Characterization of Patients with Ocular Allery

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Most allergic patients present manifestations in various target organs. The most frequent allergic condition occurs at the ocular level.
Objective: To characterize the patients with ocular allergy treated, from January 2017 to April 2019, in the allergy consultation of Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical-Surgical Hospital.
Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study was carried out in patients with a diagnosis of ocular allergy treated, in the period from January 2017 to April 2019, in the allergy clinic of Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical-Surgical Hospital. The sample consisted of 100 patients who met the selection criteria established. The skin prick test was performed and used to analyze the descriptive statistical information.
Results: The average age was 46.8 ± 4.6 years. The female sex predominated (76.0%). 82.0% had a personal history. 78.0% had a family history of atopy. Pruritus was manifested in the totality from the patients. Perennial allergic conjunctivitis (59%) was the predominant type of ocular allergy. The majority did not present associated ophthalmological diseases (73%) and only 18% presented refractive disorders. Dermatophagoides siboney (65.0%) and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (60.0%) were the most frequent allergens, with 55% of cross-reaction.
Conclusions: Ocular allergy occurs mainly in women in their fourth decade of life and with related personal or family history of atopy. Perennial allergic conjunctivitis was the most frequent clinical form, with predominant sensitization to mites of the genus Dermatophagoides.
