ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze the association between environmental and
food factors, with the risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in
children and adolescents in the State of Tlaxcala.
Materials and methods: A case-control, not matched, non-probability
study was held in 89 patients from 4 to 20 years old with a diagnosis
of ALL who reside in the State of Tlaxcala, Mexico. The research
was conducted among the cases reported at the Children´s Hospital
of Tlaxcala in the period 2008-2013. The instrument used was a questionnaire
that assesses chronic exposures to toxic substances in the
environment, previously used in Mexico.
Results: It was that found that in the group of cases the majority
of the participants were men (67.3%), with an average age of 10.7
years. In the controls, 55.1% were women and the average age was of
10.9 years. In regard to the risk of ALL related to the exposure of the
mother to cigarette smoke, children and adolescents whose mothers
refer to have been exposed to cigarette smoke were 12.3 times more
risk of ALL (95% CI; 2.5-59.4 p≤0. 002) than those whose mothers
were not exposed. It was observed that the risk of ALL is 28.4 times
higher in those who consume fruit occasionally, compared with those
who consumed it often (95% CI; 8.9-90.5 p≤0. 000).
Conclusions:It is necessary to continue studying in greater depth
the impact of environmental pollution and low consumption of
antioxidants on development of ALL.
