ABSTRACT
Introduction: the diagnosis of situs inversus (SI) goes unnoticed in approximately 45% of the cases: once arrived to the diagnosis, incidentally during the intraoperative period or as finding imaging.Clinical case: we present a left-sided acute appendicitis case diagnosed in the General Hospital of Chetumal, which corresponds to a 42-year-old woman, admitted with acute abdomen clinical data and whose diagnosis of situs inversus was intraoperative.
Discussion: it is necessary to perform a clinical history proper with a thorough physical examination to suspect the diagnosis, and then confirm this by means of imaging (rays X, ultrasound or CT scan) in order to properly plan the surgical strategy that suits the patient and the surgeon, to avoid risks or complications during the surgery.
