A series of 25 extraadrenal paragangliomas is reported. Twenty originated in the carotid body and the other five in the ganglium nodosum of the vagus nerve,
glomus tympanics and nasopharynx. Twenty-two patients were females and the average age was 52 years. All cases were of the sporadic variety. Surgical resection was performed on all patients, four had massive bleeding, one developed cerebral infarct due to ligation of the carotid artery, two lesions in cranial nerves, one recurred eight years after surgery and none developed metastases.
