Trichobezoar in an adolescent, report a case

ABSTRACT
In the general population, the estimated annual prevalence for trichotillomania in adults and adolescents is between
1 and 2%. Women are affected more often than men, in a proportion of approximately; 10: 1 Bezoars are collections
of ingested material that accumulate over time in the stomach or small intestine, may even reach the colon. We
report a case of stomach trichobezoar in a teenager. The clinical case present an adolescent of 14 years of age, comes from
a dysfunctional family, psychomotor retardation in corrected childhood, admitted to the emergency department with the
presence of epigastralgia and diffuse abdominal pain of 1 year of evolution, attended with nausea, vomiting , hiporexia
and weight loss of 10 kilograms in 1 month. The physical examination documented an abdominal mass of woody consistency
and well defined. In her anamnesis the patient admits trichotillomania and trichophagia of 1 year of evolution,
the complementary examinations (simple abdominal radiography, ultrasound and computed axial tomography concluded
that she was taking a trichobezoar, which was confirmed and resolved in the surgical exploration. In her follow-up she
was referred to the educational psychology service and the nutrition area.
An anamnesis focused on trichotillomania and trichophagia guide the diagnosis of a trichobezoar, in the presence
of epigastric abdominal mass, and obsessive-compulsive disorders documented in the anamnesis.
