ABSTRACT
To date, more than 250 million people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 around the world and of them, around five million have died from its complications. Accumulating evidence supports that COVID-19 is not simply a respiratory disease per se, but potentially affects other organs, including the placenta. Before the identification of SARS-COV-2, it was known that other coronaviruses were capable of causing serious acute respiratory diseases in humans, SARS-COV and MERS-COV causing severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and respiratory syndrome of the Middle East (MERS), respectively. Several studies have reported a relationship between covid-19 and preterm birth, low birth weight and an increase in the incidence of hospitalizations in intensive care units. This issue remains highly controversial due to the great heterogeneity of the designs of these studies. One of the most pressing questions about the effects of covid-19 in pregnant women is related to the maternal-fetal transmission of the virus. Several authors based on molecular, serological and histopathological tests in fetus-placenta and neonatal tissues suggest that vertical transmission is possible, however, there is no conclusive evidence that SARS-COV-2 can be transmitted to the fetus during pregnancy or at birth.REFERENCES
