ABSTRACT
Background: Lipoma is a benign soft tissue mesenchymal neoplasm that rarely
occurs in the oral cavity. It appears as a slow-growing mass that progressively hampers
the physiological processes of the area it occupies.
Clinical cases: This paper reports two cases assisted in different countries and worked
together. The first case was a 64-year-old male patient who presented limitation of
tongue mobility due to a tumor in the right anterior middle third of the tongue of one
year of evolution. Once excised, the histopathological study reported proliferation of
adipose cells without atypia compatible with lipoma. In the second case, a 68-yearold
patient with a single yellow tumor on the right lateral border and ventral aspect of
the tongue was evaluated by computed tomography. Surgical excision was performed
with a presumptive diagnosis of lipoma, confirmed by histology as the proliferation of
mature lobular adipocytes.
Conclusions: Tumors on the tongue that are well defined, not very symptomatic,
and slow-growing, make necessary to think about the differential diagnosis of lipomas.
Tongue location is rare, a few cases have been reported in the literature. The treatment
of choice is surgical resection, and recurrence is uncommon.
